Suku Sudhakaran (L) is the Assistant General Manager of Consolidated Shipping Services LLC in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and John Van Bergen is the Managing Director of Cory Logistics in the United Kingdom.
For the second year in a row the Global Project Logistics Network has shown its commitment to Breakbulk Asia. Breakbulk Asia is the largest and most important gathering in Asia for companies involved in the shipping of heavy-lift, project cargo and traditional breakbulk cargoes. It is where shippers have the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with the leading specialized carriers, forwarders, ports, terminals and packers who have the expertise and resources to handle oversized cargoes with unique handling requirements. Exhibitors include the world’s major carriers, forwarders and ports that handle specialized heavy-lift, project and breakbulk cargoes. The Breakbulk Asia event is an outgrowth of the Breakbulk Conference and Exhibition held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the southern part of the United States since 1989 and the Breakbulk Europe event held in Antwerp since 2006. In addition to a bustling exhibition floor, Breakbulk Asia featured a two-day conference with top speakers addressing the theme “Charting the Recovery”. The in-depth program delved into today’s most pressing breakbulk transportation issues: from cargo security to trade compliance and materials tracking initiatives. Speakers also discussed the hottest regions for breakbulk and project cargo, and review sectors such as oil and gas, and other power generation markets.

In GPLN Happenings & Events on November 26, 2009 at 11:30 am
Global Project Logistics Network member Younger Niche Logistics (YNL) has the distinction of being responsible for the movement of the single largest piece of equipment ever moved by road transport in ZhangJiaGang, Jiangsu Province, China. The piece, 14m x 7.4m x 7.9m / 86,000kgs, was moved by road from the supplier’s premises to PuXiang port, ZhangJiaGang. The move, covering 30 kms, took 22 hours to complete and involved the services of local ZhangJiaGang government, the police and officials from the department of electrical power.
In order to reduce height the unit was transported minus cradles. Only once alongside vessel was the unit postioned and secured in cradles.

PuXiang port, a privately owned facility, was chosen as the load port as access from suppliers whilst still difficult was the closest with less overhead obstructions than other roadways to the public port.
YNL were instrumental in obtaining berthing rights for the ocean carrier, a foreign flag vessel, at PuXiang port.

Rio de Janeiro: Location of GPLN's 2010 Meeting
I am writing this mail to draw attention to loads of new information that we have put up on our website about the GPLN Global Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the Intermodal South America in São Paulo a few days before. First off, you may notice a new red button in the menu on our home page. By clicking on this button you will go to a sub-website that has been created for these two events. In that sub-website is all the information concerning dates, costs, accommodations, visa information, etc., that you need to be able to plan your trip.
You might note that since we will be in a special location in Brazil we will have two optional events for those who are interested in sight seeing and / or enjoying a traditional dinner with other GPLN colleagues. First, we will have a savory barbecue dinner at a famous churrascaria, Carretão Churrascaria, and the next day there will be a half-day tour of Rio de Janeiro. These are optional events but for those of you who plan to go to Intermodal South America or those who would like to be in Rio a few days early, this is a great transition to the meeting and a good introduction to the host city.
Regarding the hotel we are doing something quite different this year with our booking. In the past we have secured a meeting rate for our members and left everyone to make their own travel arrangements. This year our system will be a bit different which is due to the fact that the hotel where the meeting will be held has only 245 rooms, which means that we would be possibly taking up 40% of the vacancy or even more which puts a major strain on the hotel to provide the space we will need under the old way we booked. To get around this issue we have had to financially guarantee the space up front. As such, we will ask when booking that the hotel will be paid in advance. There is a big positive to this arrangement though. Since we have paid in advance for the space, we have very, very preferential rates on the rooms. Booking directly is considerably more expensive than the rates we have. We will be staying at the JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro, which is right on the world famous CopacobanaBeach. Another reason that I recommend that you book with us are the facts that whenever you stay in the same hotel with other members you will get much more social activity with them and build your relationships within the group that much easier.
Further to the point about booking, as we cannot know exactly how many people will be coming to the meeting we have made our guarantee based upon our best estimate. This means we will have a fixed number of rooms that we have guaranteed for the members. Beyond GPLN’s guaranteed rooms the hotel room availability is on a first come first served basis. So book now!
As we have mentioned in other announcements, prior to our meeting will be the Intermodal South America exhibition, which GPLN will take part in. Intermodal South America is by far the largest transport and logistics event in Latin America, with more than 45,000 visitors at the last event. The only logistics event in the world that is bigger is Transportlogistic in Munich. I would highly recommend participating with us in the booth if you are serious about promoting your company in Latin America. The timing couldn’t be better as our own meeting is just a few days later. Please note, though, that we’d like to know your intention about this the sooner the better due to the fact that there will be only so many spaces in the booth. And if you already know that you want to participate with us in this booth you can register for Intermodal South America on the same form as our meeting registration.
Our one-on-one meeting scheduler is found in the same menu and will be up and running soon so that you can make appointments with other GPLN members. There will be a separate announcement on this in the near future.
You may also want to note that the payment terms and conditions are posted on the sub-website and we will adhere to them strictly.
Finally, I would recommend that each and every one of us check the Brazilian visa requirements in advance for Brazil and make arrangements as early as possible (now, if you can). This is very important as we want to avoid anyone having any problems with last minute visas as we have had in the past.
For any information about either of these two events please contact our commercial director, Luzius Haffter. To e-mail Luzius Haffter directly click here.
For updates keep checking this blog space or follow us on Twitter.
I look forward to seeing you all there!

The Global Project Logistics Network (GPLN) announced that it has been admitted to the American based Specialized Carriers and Riggers Association (SC&RA).
“We are very proud to be a part of SC&RA,” said Gary Dale Cearley, Executive Director of GPLN, “I know it sounds funny that a network would join an association but from our perspective it makes total sense. This is a group of project specialists at the end of the day and we are very serious about the industry so we should take our place beside them.”
Cearley went on to explain the difference in the type organizations the two are. “GPLN is a network and SC&RA is an association,” said Cearley, “GPLN focuses on promoting business between the members, building a common brand and promoting our members directly at conferences and exhibitions around the world. An association helps to develop and promote an industry as a whole rather than a group of like minded companies within an industry.”
Cearley iterated that two groups have lots that they can offer one another in their areas of expertise as both grow. “I look forward to our involvement in SC&RA. They are a very worthwhile organization.”

This company, formerly known as Alternativ Kazakhstan is a French invested company and part of the Mory Group in France. Lomer Point Bridge comes to us with good references. I met them last year in Shanghai at the Transport Logistichina and they finally decided to join our group. We welcome them aboard!
If there is any way that I can help you or if you have any questions about the group I am more than happy to help out.

Several GPLN members had a good show at the annual BreakBulk Conference & Exhibition held in New Orleans this year. We were represented by GPLN members from Asia, Europe, North America and South America and it was a very good marketing exercise for us as usual.

We have already had membership applications for new members here and our booth participants were able to meet a variety of specialized carriers, project logistics companies, port operators and related companies. We also got to sample the delights of the French Quarter (especially Bourbon Street!) and I, after how many times in New Orleans, also finally got a chance to go to the world famous K-Paul’s Louisiana Kitchen, the restaurant belonging to globally acclaimed chef, Paul Prudhomme. We went there with several of our booth participants. On the last night as well many of us went to the piano bar at Pat O’s and had just a great time!

Let me catch myself…
The event wasn’t about how much of a good time we could have in the French Quarter in New Orleans, but we definitely were able to get the time in. Most of us brought home some good business and we all garnished some very good contacts as well. So I say as a marketing effort our booth was an unqualified success! I suspect that BreakBulk 2009 will be even better, whether this is held in New Orleans or in Houston, as the rumors have it.

I think the time and money to go to Transport Logistichina 2008 was well spent. On the one hand I did not see nearly as many project logistics and project charter companies there as other type companies, I still saw a good many companies of interest to us. And the watch hawkers and brochure collecting locals were a bit of a nuisance but it was far outweighed by the companies we did see there who we most likely otherwise would not have met. GPLN will grow even more due to our exposure at this trade show. We are now getting ready to have a look at registering for the mother conference and exhibition:
Transport Logistics 2009 in Munich.
We hope to have several members there with us. The organizer told me that last year there were over 48,000 visitors in seven halls in Munich and that next year they expect to have eight halls. It will be a very good experience for us and we at the Global Project Logistics Network plan to be present. It is just a matter of how large the presence and who will come along with us.

Whew! I am worn out.
Yesterday afternoon we concluded the BreakBulk Europe 2008 Conference & Exhibition and I personally think it will be a very good success for us in the months to come. I was able to speak with some very good prospects in many markets we are looking to cover: Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Gambia,
Qatar, Central America, etc. I also attended a round table discussion on breakbulk in the CIS countries. There were three presentations by rail officials in Azerbaijan, Georgia and by Jawad Kamel, the CEO of Advance International, a very well known project forwarder. Jawad spoke about a multi-million dollar project that his company completed for the United States government: Logistics for constructing the new United States Embassy in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
I could relate very well to this because I also undertook an embassy project in 1996, the United States Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam.
GPLN was well r
epresented with 17 participants at our booth and I dare say that they all got something good from this. We have already booked for the BreakBulk Conference in New Orleans and there will be a new Break Bulk Conference in Singapore next year so we will be on for that as well. I am off to Turkey next week to check out the hotels for our next GPLN global meeting. I look forward to it!

This photo was sent in by Patrick Dick of The Freight Company in Thailand. He came across these two respective “accidents” on a road South of Bangkok. Here is a prime example of what happens when transport people get careless and don’t pay attention to center of gravity. “If there is one good thing that the truckers can take out of this situation,” says Patrick light heartedly, “It is that even though the cargo was not loaded well at least we can tell that the cargo second truck was secured properly!” We at GPLN are pretty sure that the consignee wouldn’t see the humor in that statement…

The Global Project Logistics Network (GPLN)
last week took its 100th member office when it accepted for membership M.G. International Transport , a German based company with extensive experience in the near Middle East (Jordan, Iraq, Iran, etc.). M.G. International has brought in four offices into our group: Siegen, Amman, Basrah and Baghdad.
I for one have been happy with the growth of the group over the past year. We have had a very good focus on projects only companies, which not all of our competitors can brag as such. The biggest part of our success is that we have really looked for professional companies. We don’t take all comers otherwise we would lose the focus that makes GPLN unique. It will be very interesting in the near future to see where we go with the group. I personally want to see some quality companies in Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, etc.), the Caucasian region (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia) as well as the Baltics (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) and the other CIS countries (Russia, Belorus and Ukraine). Oh, and we are also looking for good people to work with in Norway, Mexico and certain other Latin American countries, especically the Central American region. And then there are the main African oil producers such as Angola and Nigeria. So much more to do!
I am open for ideas if anyone knows of any good, professional independent project logistics companies in these locations. We have grown so well, but there is so much further to go!
