Grove Crane readied for movement to Qatar’s Dolphin Gas Project

In Uncategorized on March 10, 2010 at 4:02 pm

GPLN member Arshiya Logistics WLL (formerly BDP Qatar WLL) handled some Groove Cranes movement from Michel Machinery Company Inc in the United States for the Qatari Shareholding Company (QSC) who is engaged into Dolphin Gas Project and several projects for RasGas / Qatar Gas in Qatar.

Arshiya Logistics WLL(Qatar) with help of 5K Logistics handled this project movement Ex-USA factory to Qatar project site. The transportation was done using a MAFI-Cargo trailers from the factory to GalvestonPort. The pick up locations were:

- St. Louis, Missouri – 2 cranes

- Corpus Christi, Texas – one crane

- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – one crane

A breakulk vessel from Galveston Port, United States, to Doha, Qatar was booked. Arshiya Logistics also handled inland haulage from DohaPort to the Qatari client’s site using low bed trailers and as well was engaged into arranging the duty waiver and exemption for this client at Doha Customs. Along with the haulage Arshiya arranged the police escort and Qatar Traffic Department permissions.

Initially, QSC had to move total four Grove cranes and the value was approx USD 1.8 million. Technical specifications were 581.624 m3 and total gross weight of 160 tons with height of 3.5 meters. There were letter of credit problems considering the time deadline, etc., and many bottlenecks in documentation because the supplier was dealing with Qatar client for the first time.

QSC nominated GPLN member Arshiya Logistics, considering Arshiya’s professionalism in project logistics globally. But handling projects requires special personalized touch as well as technical expertise because it is totally different ball game than normal containerized business. The following hurdles are confirm that if any project movement is given to any inexperienced service provider just based on rates then blue chip clients are off course paying penalties for their decision.

1) Just one day before the vessel arrival in Galveston Port Hurricane Ike hit the area.

2) Power, water issues keep GalvestonPort offline for about two weeks after Hurricane Ike left the port and much of the region. There was no trace of any shipment as the Port Authority closed the port.

3) But for Arshiya Logistics WLL (Qatar) it was matter client serving and 100% transparency. Arshiya Logistics arranged a 3rd-party surveyor to the port with help the help of 5K Logistics, the GPLN member in Philadelphia. The surveyor accessed the cranes and completed the survey. Everything was okay except some few tires, which were affected because of mud.

4) Most of the vessels cancelled calling at GalvestonPort after this hurricane.

5) These cranes were lying in GalvestonPort for almost 45 days.

Shipment was urgent for the Qatari company and for that they had full trust in Arshiya Logistics’s reliability and professionalism. Arshiya Logistics managed to get the shipment out from United States and in Doha within 40 days without any rate hike and port storage issues.

Arshiya Logistics team of Mr. Vaibhav Malpekar and Mr. Jigar Shah, with 5K Logistics (Mr. Paul J McGrath and team) were in full coordination and had conference calls almost every day in order to work out alterative solutions so that the delivery of these four cranes to the client could be managed as per prior commitment, in spite of all these hurdles.

Arshiya Logistics is handling more projects for the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) as well as KAHRAMA (the Qatar Water & Electricity Board).

Ticona Project: Two shore cranes offloading steel rack

In Uncategorized on March 4, 2010 at 7:01 am

Europe Cargo was approached for the reception in Antwerp ex geared coaster up to barged to Fluor Terminal Frankfurt, Germany. The vessel, MV Jumbo Vision loaded in Punta Cugno, Italy and sailed from Punta Cugno port. The project consisted of 37 pieces of preassembled steel rack (858.303 mt / 14,095.695 m3), two cases of lifting equipment (2,276 mt / 6 m3) and eight pieces of lifting equipment (adjustable spreader bars / extenders: 7478 mt / 18 m3).

Europe Cargo’s supervisor reported that the cargo was loaded under deck as well as on deck. On Europe Cargo’s instructions, the crew unlashed the chains and unwelded stoppers and D-rings upon arrival at the Antwerp port.

The cargo was unloaded at the Europe Cargo terminal with specialized and necessary stevedore lifting equipment (extenders – easily adjustable) and by two Gottwald motorized mobile cranes with capacities of 100 mt (not by ship’s gear due to outreach and storage onto the shore and two cranes instead of one due to length of the cargo).

Due to the large storage area required, MV Jumbo Vision had to shift 40 m. Europe Cargo jointly surveyed unloading operations with the receiver’s appointed surveyors. Europe Cargo also arranged customs clearance in Antwerp. After unloading, necessary repairs and cleaning of the frames was arranged and took several days. When this was completed Europe Cargo ordered and arranged loading of four barges (110 m x 45 m) for the inland transport via Rhine river to the final Frankfurt site.

Europe Cargo’s professional expertise in the project was highly appreciated by the receivers’ engineers!

Cory Logistics transports redundant Steel Mill Equipment in Sheffield to be sent to India via the Port of Hull

In Uncategorized on March 3, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Cory Logistics, GPLN member in the United Kingdom, have been busy in the ‘home of stainless steel’ in 2009 and will continue to work through 2010. The first phase moving is a softener and de-scaler line from a redundant Sheffield Steel mill to its new home in India.

The steel industry in Sheffield dated back to the 14th Century. By the turn of the new century the Sheffield economy diversified and it is Cory Logistics who has been employed to remove and ship part of this manufacturing plant to India.

This project has been jointly operated with Canadian SCAC, and will move a total one hundred and forty 40’ high cube containers and a total of four thousand five hundred freight

tons as break bulk. Individual pieces can be more than 12 meters in length and can be up to 5 meters wide weighing more than 30 tons.

Mark Harding Commercial Director has been involved from the beginning and described how he pooled resources within Cory Logistics to create a dedicated project team. Mark said, “We have all the capabilities under one roof, planning has been complex and challenging”, but maintained that Cory’s will continue to offer a competitive advantage to create small teams of dedicated experts in their field.

“We have had one person negotiating space allocation on container ships, another discussing the safe securing of out of gauge cargo and its movement in relation to UK road restrictions,

whilst a third person is chartering a vessel to carry four thousand five hundred freight tons!”

The containers are moving through Felixstowe whilst the break bulk cargo will be transported by specialist equipment to the Port of Hull for shipment to Chennai, where it will be collected and delivered to site.

Logi Trans AS’s Office, Tananger, Norway

In Uncategorized on February 24, 2010 at 4:09 pm

A lot of things have happened in and around GPLN Norway member, Logi Trans AS, the last year. We will update you in Logi Trans’s own Magne Eide’s own words:

We are very happy with the situation in Logi Trans. Every year in the history of Logi Trans, have resulted in a “best year ever”, so also for 2009. The turnover for 2009 exceeded for the first time NOK 100 mill – equivalent to US$ 17,8 mill. The result is up approx. 11,5% from 2008. Despite the recession, we are very optimistic for the future, and expect a continuous growth between 10 and 15% for 2010.

Logi Trans is a major participant in the Norwegian offshore market with long time relations to most vendors in the Norwegian offshore industry. We hold the existing local contracts with Seadrill / Seawell Group, Rowan Drilling, GE Oil & Gas (approved vendor). Several small and medium sized companies in the region are the base for the daily business.

We have during 2009 become an accredited IATA airfreight agent. In addition, we have started up our own consolidation service from Houston to Stavanger together with Logistics International Inc in Houston. In these days Logi Trans is also establishing a subsidiary company in Denmark.

One of the most important things amongst them all is the fact that we have become a member of the GPLN, and we hope this will give us a lot of exciting jobs in the future. We have received a lot of welcome greetings from the members, and we appreciate that. We are confident that our company will continue the development and growth and look forward to being of services to all customers that need a reliable logistics partner in Norway.

Ticona Project: Loading steel rack to trailer

In Uncategorized on February 18, 2010 at 2:32 am

Heavy Cargo bound for Pasir Gudang rested on beams and elephant legs

In Uncategorized on February 17, 2010 at 4:01 pm

GPLN member Trans International Logistics Sdn Bhd recently completed the movement of the Synthetic Latex Global plant from Europe and Asia to Pasir Gudang, Malaysia, with a total project volume of about 20,000 FRT.

As indirect tax exemption consultants for the project, Trans International had successfully applied their expertise in submitting, tabulating and obtaining exemption approvals from the Malaysian authorities. They also excelled in applying and obtaining import permits and governmental certification from regulatory bodies for the importation of their special equipments and machineries.

Other than general cargoes by sea, air and road transports, the project included movements of heavy lift cargoes of three reactors at 95 tons each and three strippers at 65 tons each and other over-dimensioned cargoes. For the heavy lifts, on-carriage to site was arranged on multi-axle trailers after temporary storage on elephant legs and beams so as to be in coordination with the plant site readiness and receiving management.

All deliveries were executed well within the required time frames and with zero untoward incidents.

Do you want to know who is good?

In Uncategorized on February 15, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Yesterday I saw a Google Adword advertisement linking me to the “world’s greatest project cargo network”, I believe is how the wording went. So I was interested. I clicked on the link only to find that this company was a brand new group and I could count all of the members on one hand and they were all in the same company that the owner of the network was a partner / director of.

Hmmm… Best network in the world, huh? How does anyone honestly make that proclamation without any members? I guess this guy, who knows who he is, is comfortable with that kind of advertising. My advice to that kind of grand standing is always caveat emptor – buyer beware!

Then there is the other competitor who claims to the be world’s largest project network. But when you look at that group you will see that the majority of companies aren’t project specialists at all and are nowhere in the market.

My recommendation is that if you want to know how good a network really is, look at its members. When you see the quality of the members then you know how good the group is. That is the simple, no fail litmus test. Don’t believe anyone’s claims. Look under the hood before you buy the car.

That makes it easy, doesn’t it?

Janet Nodar of Breakbulk Magazine having a laugh at Breakbulk Asia 2010

In Uncategorized on February 14, 2010 at 4:02 pm

For the second year in a row the Global Project Logistics Network has shown its commitment to Breakbulk Asia. Breakbulk Asia is the largest and most important gathering in Asia for companies involved in the shipping of heavy-lift, project cargo and traditional breakbulk cargoes. It is where shippers have the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with the leading specialized carriers, forwarders, ports, terminals and packers who have the expertise and resources to handle oversized cargoes with unique handling requirements. Exhibitors include the world’s major carriers, forwarders and ports that handle specialized heavy-lift, project and breakbulk cargoes. The Breakbulk Asia event is an outgrowth of the Breakbulk Conference and Exhibition held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the southern part of the United States since 1989 and the Breakbulk Europe event held in Antwerp since 2006. In addition to a bustling exhibition floor, Breakbulk Asia featured a two-day conference with top speakers addressing the theme "Charting the Recovery". The in-depth program delved into today’s most pressing breakbulk transportation issues: from cargo security to trade compliance and materials tracking initiatives. Speakers also discussed the hottest regions for breakbulk and project cargo, and review sectors such as oil and gas, and other power generation markets.

Magne Eide of Logi Trans AS

In Uncategorized on February 5, 2010 at 11:31 am

Global Project Logistics Network member Younger Niche Logistics (YNL) has the distinction of being responsible for the movement of the single largest piece of equipment ever moved by road transport in ZhangJiaGang, Jiangsu Province, China. The piece, 14m x 7.4m x 7.9m / 86,000kgs, was moved by road from the supplier’s premises to PuXiang port, ZhangJiaGang. The move, covering 30 kms, took 22 hours to complete and involved the services of local ZhangJiaGang government, the police and officials from the department of electrical power.

In order to reduce height the unit was transported minus cradles. Only once alongside vessel was the unit positioned and secured in cradles.

PuXiang port, a privately owned facility, was chosen as the load port as access from suppliers whilst still difficult was the closest with less overhead obstructions than other roadways to the public port.

YNL were instrumental in obtaining berthing rights for the ocean carrier, a foreign flag vessel, at PuXiang port.

GPLN members share locomotive project

In Uncategorized on September 7, 2009 at 3:16 pm

GPLN members Trans-Trading GmbH, Hamburg and UTM Projects & Logistics Pty. Ltd., Brisbane have jointly secured the transport of 68 locomotives each weighing 132 tons, from Mannheim, Germany up to placed on to rail at the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal, Brisbane, Australia.

The locomotives, manufactured in Munich, were transported from Munich by low loaders to Mannheim where GPLN member Trans-Trading GmbH received them.  “Due to height restrictions along the route to Mannheim, the locomotives arrived with a temporary roof which was replaced with the actual roof, including a pantograph, upon arrival at the heavy lift terminal in Mannheim,” said Thorsten Reinke, Hamburg branch manager of Trans-Trading, Once permanent roofs were assembled, the locomotives, two per lot, were shipped by river barge to Bremerhaven. Once in Bremerhaven, the locomotives were lifted out of the river barge using mobile cranes and were loaded on to Ro-Ro vessels for direct shipment to Brisbane.

ish10picUpon arrival in Brisbane, the locomotives were pulled off the vessel using an eight-axle hydraulic trailer and were delivered to the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal (BMT). At the BMT, a trailer with a locomotive is driven underneath a lifting system and locomotives are lowered on to rail.  “The challenges in Brisbane included, but were not limited to, the coordination of the tides as locomotives can only come down the vessel’s ramp during low tide,” said Peter Schweizer, managing director of UTM Projects & Logistics. “Also we had to coordinate transport with port security and the BMT operator in order to make certain deliveries did not interfere with regular train operations at the BMT.”

With the arrival of the first Pacific National locomotive in May 2009 the second stage of this massive project has started. So far, a total of 27 locomotives have been delivered without any delays and to the

fullest satisfaction of the customer, Schweizer said..

The Global Project Logistics Network Celebrates 5 Years of Growth and Progress

In Uncategorized on August 31, 2009 at 3:47 pm

GPLN Group Photo TunisThe Global Project Logistics Network (GPLN), the world’s largest network of independent international project logistics specialists and charterers has now turned five years old.

“Our group has lots of milestones to be proud of,” said Gary Dale Cearley, Executive Director of GPLN, “We have grown from only ten members in our first year to being the largest projects logistics specialist network in the world.  We should be around 200 member offices near the end of this year.  And that is no mean feat.”

Cearley puts the growth down to GPLN’s commitment to promoting the group globally.

“From the beginning our focus has been global,” continued Cearley, “We have members on every continent, in every region of the world and in every major projects port.  We have been very focused in this aspect.  We attend shipping and maritime trade shows about ten times per year.  No other group does that.  And we promote only within the range of project forwarding and chartering – no LCL specialists and no airfreight forwarders on our roll.  Only real and verifiable project logistics specialists.  In the end this sets us apart and ahead of the pack.”

GPLN has also been keeping it global when it comes to their annual meetings.  “We have had meetings in the past in Dublin, Bangkok, Dubai, Prague, Kuala Lumpur, Tunis and next we will be in Rio de Janeiro,” said Luzius Haffter, GPLN’s new Commercial Director, “And this next meeting will be even bigger than before.  We are working hard on it already.”

The fact that the Global Project Logistics Network’s prestige has grown can be reflected in the corporate sponsors that they have been able to attract such as Beluga Shipping and Rickmers-Linie.

GPLN has been recording its history through photos on the GPLN website as well.  “We are constantly trawling our members for photos of their moves so we can get these out to everyone,” said Gary Dale Cearley, “This is one of the best ways we have been able to promote our specialties within the group and to the various industries that are served by project forwarders and project charterers.  Our members have lots that they can be proud of over the years and I want to make sure that the entire world knows.”

Titan tackles Singapore lift

In Uncategorized on August 28, 2009 at 9:30 am

Titan Logistics recently completed a couple of heavy-duty jobs in Singapore, covering both infrastructure and leisure projects.

boatlift_ish10The first was the lifting of the luxury boat Braveheart at Jurong Port. Carried out for Coli Shipping & Transport Group, the job entailed lifting the 430-ton 40-meter-long Braveheart from the transport vessel Lena. The rigging, weighing 84 tons, had to be taken into account because of the boat’s soft hull.

A 1600-ton Sheerleg Crane Barge was used to discharge the boat from the vessel. The smaller crane barges could not perform the job due to their limited hook-height. Titan personnel were involved in planning, rigging design and execution of the job together with the technical department of SAL Shipping, the captain and superintendent of the vessel, Coli Shipping. Boat was discharged safely from the vessel to the waters off Jurong Port, Singapore.

The second job was the transportation of a rail-grinding vehicle for Singapore Mass Rapid Transport (SMRT) for the island’s MRT network.  The rail-grinding vehicle consisted of a three-car configuration, with the heaviest car at 45 tons. The units were transported from the port of Singapore to the MRT Depot at Kim Chuan, and later relocated to Bishan Depot.

Almajdouie PSC Heavylift move of Evaporators for Marafiq Project

Evaporator-1-corner-view

Saudi Arabia GPLN member Almajdouie Heavy Lift Transport and Engineering secured a mega contract for transportation of super heavy and oversize evaporators module from Bilfal Heavy Industry (Ex-Works Yard) to Marafiq IWPP Project Site Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

The Marafiq Desalination plant will be one of the largest water desalination processing plants in the world.  The execution of Project is ongoing where Almajdouie Heavy Lift (ALMADOUIE HEAVYLIFT) and Almajdouie PSC Heavylift (MPSC) are jointly utilizing their expertise in moving such heaviest units by Self Propelled Module Trailers (SPMT’s) trailers.

“In total we handled 18 units and out of these 9 units were locally manufactured by Bilfal of Saudi Arabia and remaining unit were manufactured in Korea and UAE,” said Izaz Ahmed Watangi, Vice President Logistics of Almadouie, “It is worth to mention that we were also engaged in loadout of some units in the United Arab Emirates as well.”

Huge evaporators are very important for the project. Each evaporator is of 1810 tons in weight, 65 meters length, 22 meters width & 13 meters height.

We used 84 axles of latest generation Self Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMT). The General Manager Mr. Mark Brereton Stuart set this in a 42 axle side by side configuration.  This type of equipment was the only way to handle such large and heavy loads, along a combination of public and private roads.

P1010086Almadouie PSC has a team of specially trained operators for SPMT operation, supported by a highly experienced operations team headed by Ely Coyoca, International Operations Manager, who is in the field for the last 25 years who have been involved in some of the largest moves in the region and the wider World. This team worked seamlessly with the Almadouie PSC team in Dammam to jointly provide all the services and expertise to carry out the transportations, particularly for the Bilfal units.

The major obstacle for the Bilfal units, was that the initial conclusion was that they could not be moved by road. Almadouie PSC was called in by Bilfal to verify on the situation as the responsible wanted to make sure the massive loads reach in time safely. Almadouie PSC carry eminent know-how in such movements and ultimately concluded saying that “it is a highly complex move but it is possible”.  Since the project were in the eastern region Almadouie PSC engineering unit extended their support by conducting thorough studies and by preparing and analyzing stuff right from bidding stage till the final approval of relevant technical documents. In many areas route modifications were needed, including residential areas from the approach roads to the site. Required route modifications were:

-          Hard trimming of more than 400 trees in a residential area that had to be maintained throughout the project duration
-          Removal and replacement of 108 light posts, and there replacement within strict time windows dictated by the security police.
-          Crossing of TS-1 major highway, twice. The second crossing was at a very rarely used crossing place. We had to survey and simulate this crossing meter by meter in order to verify that the SPMT’s could pass safely across.
-          Removal and replacement within the same day of three sets of signal lights for each move.
-          Propping of three bridges for the duration of the project.

Each move involved several agencies. The Royal Commission had a vital role in firstly studying and working with us to find the solutions to move by road, this involved very special permissions to carry to the work in the above list, and in general to encroach in residential areas with a cargo of this size. It was essential to obtained written permission from Saudi Electric Company, Saudi Telecom Co. and Marafiq existing underground facilities. At the same time the support of local Police and security greatly lend a hand in regards of the safe crossing of the cargo through the very busy TS-1 highway, and in general providing safety and security where needed. We also used several subcontractors for work to prepare the route and handle the street fixtures stated above.

Operation team along with Mr. Ely and Mr. Asif Batt said on average each delivery would take two days to travel the 9 km to site, which is exactly as planned. However, after several moves arrival at the site was also completed in one day, which is a testament to the organization of all the relevant agencies, the quality of the equipment, and the skill of the operators.

Evaporator-3

MPSC is now at the forefront of the movement of super heavy loads throughout the region. We have been involved in moves of up to 5,000 tons and moved more than 30 items over 1,000 tons in the past two years, in countries all over the Middle East, but particularly KSA and UAE. We have also carried out the Tower lift of several vessels up to 1,100 tons during the same period. We are now one of the leaders in the Middle East in our industry, and we have expanded our equipment fleet and profile in the region, leading to the award of key projects that will allow the companies further growth in the coming years.

Transportas Moves Paper Mill Project from Germany to UK

Transportas Internationale Spedition recently moved a big paper mill project of about 20,000 freight tons from Southern Germany to Kings Lynn at the East coast of United Kingdom.

IM002552

The entire project consisted of about 80 normal truck loads, 65 oversized and heavy load trailers and 14 pieces which had to be shipped in combined transport truck, river barge, coaster vessel and truck due to the maximum width up to 7.50 m and height of the biggest pieces were 5.40 m in combination with the maximum weight of 125 tons.

IM002556

“Transportas organized transportation from factory via the various routes which have been necessary out of cargo´s physics up to just in sequence delivery to the jobsite,” said Claudio Blasizzo, managing director of Transportas Internationale Spedition, “The main challenge for the oversized cargo was that the main road through the whole city of Kings Lynn had to be closed and authorities and officials only allowed us during the nights from Saturday to Sunday.  Also there were twelve traffic lights and other traffic related establishments that had to be removed.”

5K Logistics Successfully Moves 17’5” High “Piggyback” by Rail

Steam generator MN to IL

5K Logistics has successfully managed the transport of a new engineered combination of a process gas boiler and its companion steam drum as a completed “piggyback” unit. These new units were manufactured by Deltak Corporation in Minneapolis, Minnesota for their customer Selas Processing Fluid Corporation in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania.

The units were delivered via a combination rail/truck to the Linde Process Plants facilities at the CITGO refinery in Romeoville, Illinois, and the Marc West refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. The piggyback designed units were delivered with an actual height of 17’7” and an actual weight of 141,300 lbs.  For the Romeoville facility and a height of 14’2” and actual weight of 108,000 lbs. to the Corpus Christie facility.

5K Logistics devised and executed the transportation plan in cooperation with the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern railroads to move these two units together by rail from Deltak  in Plymouth, Minnesota. The rail shipments were routed on the Union Pacific Railroad and BN Railroad systems to a nearby rail spur and offloaded to a Goldhofer truck to complete the shipment to the jobsite.

Typically these units are shipped separately due to the excessive height restrictions.  These shipments were the largest design component ever shipped piggyback style by Selas Fluid Processing which resulted in a major cost savings for transport and field installation related expenditures.

“Shipping these units as a piggyback unit saved the customer a considerable amount of money as well as increased the installation efficiency at the job site”, says Paul McGrath, President 5K Logistics. 5-K Logistics, Selas Fluid Processing, Linde Process Plants, Deltak Corporation, Union  Pacific Railroad, Burlington Northern Railroad, CN Railroad and Imperial Crane Corporation worked together for the past eight months in developing the transport plan for delivery to both of the sites. According to Mr. McGrath this truly was a total team transport effort and was executed with precision!

Your Mine is Shut Down for Parts? Call BDG International!

In Uncategorized on July 8, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Chicago based GPLN member BDG International proved that project cargo isn’t always about size!  During a standard export shipment from Peru to Canada, space was tight from Lima to Los Angeles International Airport.  Only 786 kgs, the pallet of mining supply parts was urgent to be received in Canada and install in a machine that was already shut down.

W8958-A 004

At first the shipper was looking at standard service from Lima to Edmonton International Airport.  Each day the cargo was delayed and there did not seem to be any space on the Lan Chile flights northbound via Los Angeles International Airport.

BDG International received the call to get involved and after learning all the facts they re-routed the cargo to Miami in order to transship the cargo on Air Canada.  Lan Chile was booked to Los Angeles International Airport full for days at the express level due to Asparagus and other perishables moving priority over any general cargo.

“The cargo moved express to Miami as planned,” said Lisa Waller, vice president of BDG International, “During this time the weather in Northeast and Central United States and Canada began to deteriorate.  It looked as it we may have a shut down in Toronto Airport.  In order to work around this we had a back up plan.”

“Then next morning when the Lan Chile flight arrived the word was already out that the airport in Toronto was shutting down,” recounted Waller, “Immediately we were on the phone with plan B.  We were going to fly the cargo into Montana and truck to Calgary avoiding the storms.”

W8958-A 005

“At this point the customer stated that the cargo was now more than urgent but we had to charter a plane.  The mines were loosing over one million USD per day.  As of 10:30 on that Friday we had the “go” to find and charter a plane from Miami to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada.”

“Due to the distance and the urgency we were able to locate a DC-9 and had the freight on board by 18:00 same day,” said Waller, “Meanwhile, we cleared the goods through U.S. Customs, awaited its arrival from Peru, recovered the cargo at 10:30 am, brought to our designated warehouse in Miami, prepared for export, turned the cargo around for export, and delivered the shipment to the charter airline by 18:00 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (one hour north of Miami) where the charter was just available for loading.”

W8958-A 010

The carrier departed timely and as it entered the next transfer point the weather became increasingly worse.  BDG could not fly the cargo direct into Yellowknife due to the fact that this is not an international customs port.  Thus, they had the cargo landed in Winnipeg for customs clearance where they had people on the ground waiting.  The Canadian broker cleared the goods at 01:00 am, waited for de-icing and was back in the air ASAP.  Cargo arrived into Yellowknife at 04:00 and was signed off at 06:00 on the Sunday morning.

This was a successful move for all.  There was not a minute wasted!

Advance International Seeks to Capitalize on Kazakhstan’s Development

In Uncategorized on July 6, 2009 at 12:19 pm

In Kazakhstan, leading global freight forwarder, Advance International Transport has relocated its Almaty office to a newer and more efficient location to better serve its growing customer base in this vital Caucasian country.

The office remains responsible for co-coordinating all export and import transport enquiries handled by Advance International, both to and from Kazakhstan.

Advance International has long had a presence in the country, says the company’s President and CEO, Jawad Kamel, and the office move builds on the need to extend the company’s facilities in response to the bullish growth of its turnover in the country.

Mr Kamel says: “We are making this move to a new and more efficient facility as we have been very successful in attracting business and have outgrown our previous location. It is important to build our presence in one of the world’s most exciting regions for freight transport.

“There has never been a better time to take a look at Kazakhstan and what it can offer freight shippers seeking a way to connect China and the EU. Massive extensions to Kazakhstan’s transport network will be repaid as freight volume between China and Kazakhstan is forecast to double by next year to 25 million tons.

breakbulk1

“I am very excited by the prospects Kazakhstan offers and the real alternative the country gives to freight forwarders and their clients who wish to connect two of the world’s greatest trading blocs. An incredible US$12 billion is being budgeted over the next five years in the country’s road and rail infrastructure which can only boost traffic with China and result in routes that do not involve Russian territory,” he says.

Kazakhstan has been a sleeping giant in terms of transport.  Now the country is awakening and freight forwarders like Advance International can only profit from the new opportunities the country offers.

Mr Kamal adds: “The Great Silk Road has always stood for trade between east and west. Where once caravans moved slowly between China and the west, taking the finest goods in both directions, now Advance International can look forward to bringing the latest consumer goods, finished products and containers at the speed of the fastest rail wagon or road truck, along one of the world’s great trading routes.”

So how does this positive outlook translate to activity that can benefit both Advance International and its clients’ bottom-lines?

advantage-poti-signing-group

“We are seeing splendid examples of targeted investment – US builder GE has supplied 150 rail locomotives to Kazakhstan, for example. We are responding to these positive signals by real investment in the country. Just over two years ago, we re-organized our office arrangements in Kazakhstan by establishing a new dedicated office in Almaty to provide stronger customer service support for our Advantage Express Railfreight Service, between Poti in Georgia and Almaty,” Mr Kamal explained.

The Advantage Express Service offers shippers an efficient routing for any cargoes that they are moving to and from the Central Asian Republics. It has an advertised transit time of eight days between Poti and Almaty and has been extended from Almaty to the northwest Chinese city of Urumqi to provide a link from this inland region of China to the Black Sea port of Poti. Nauri Logistics recently arranged over length shipments for fellow GPLN member Trans Trading for a German customer. The cargo was a PSA Adsorber and a purge gas drum which had a volume of 2,835 m3 with a weight of 560 mt.

LINDEAGIMG_1491“The cargo loaded in Masan, in the very southern part of the Korean Peninsula,” said Mr. J.S. Moon, managing director of Nauri Logistics, “The cargo sailed a total of 34 days to the Port of Houston where it was discharged.  The goods were arranged on Rickmers since most of packages are out of gauge.”

One such piece had dimensions of 23.6m x 4.38m x 4.57m with a weight 46.5 t.

Both Trans Trading and Nauri Logistics gained their German customer’s gratitude for their good cooperation and received a letter of appreciation for a job well done!

The GPLN Spring Tour 2009 was a rousing success!

In Uncategorized on June 2, 2009 at 8:03 am

I don’t even know where to begin!

Patrick and I just got back on Saturday from our three week journey to Munich, Tunis and Antwerp (with a one day side visit to Köln to see Southern fried rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert! – thanks again to Ralf Samorin for arranging the tickets for us!).  With as many days missed in the office as I have had in a long while I can still say that this was one heck of a productive time.

Transport Logistic 2009 Poster Transport Logistic 2009 turned out to be a major success for us in that with nearly 48,000 visitors and hundreds of exhibitors in eight exhibition halls GPLN was the only project logistics network that was represented.  Of course we saw some old friends but we made many new ones in the mean time.  The visit to Munich also was reinforced what I found in Russia the month before:  There are many good solid companies out there who know about the GPLN brand and view it very positively.

GPLN Ball CapOn the promotional front we debuted our GPLN baseball caps, which were a hit (no pun intended) with almost everyone.  These caps were passed out to members who attended the annual conference as well as serious GPLN prospects and other key players in the project cargo industry.  The hats are very special because on the bill (visor) of these caps are photos of moves done by GPLN members making each cap unique.

Tunis, in my opinion, was a testament to the group we have been building these past five years.  Like I said to the quorum in my opening presentation, we had gathered together in our room the most experienced group of professional project cargo experts in the world.  Other groups strive for what we have accomplished here and I really feel bad for the people who couldn’t make it.  By all the feedback I have received the meetings went very well between the members and both of our Gold Level Sponsors, Rickmers-Linie and Beluga Shipping, were well received!  (By the way, if you wanted copies of either the Rickmers or the Beluga presentations please let me know and I will try to arrange it for you.  Also, if you want a copy of the Beluga project cargo handbook let me know – I will need the complete address where Beluga can forward this to you though).

Besides the great meeting I would like to give a very special thanks to SNS International and Afrimar for sponsoring the most excellent banquet dinner that we have ever had in our six GPLN meetings!  Those who missed this dinner really missed a memorable time.  The location was superb, the weather was perfect, the food was top notch and even the sunset cooperated to make the evening great.  SNS International and Afrimar have definitely set the standard for how these banquet dinners could go.

Also we owe a special thank you to The Freight Company (Thailand) for sponsoring the welcome reception cocktail.  This was a very good mixer that got us all in the mood for a good meeting in a great location.

In Tunis we also got lots of business taken care of.  For those who saw my presentation they are aware of some up coming changes regarding membership terms and conditions as well as how we will approach participation in GPLN exhibition booths.  I also reminded everyone about getting me information for press releases, stories for newsletters and photos for the website.  And, not to deviate too much, but if you haven’t seen our photo gallery on the website recently, you really ought to take a look.  It gets more and more impressive as time marches on:  http://www.gpln.net/cpg1420/album.php

GPLN BBE 2009 Groskopf FaridFinally, off to Antwerp for the BreakBulk Europe Conference & Exhibition 2009 where I was a panelist in one of the round table discussions (regarding what happens when project cargo is held for non-payment).  I found this conference greatly expanded in both space and in terms of bodies.  The conference nearly doubled in visitors from 1400 in 2008 to 2600 in 2009.  I met some really good prospects from other parts of the world as well such as Africa and Latin America.

For anyone who did not make it to these conferences all I can say is that some solid opportunities were there to be had.  I really hope you can make these events next year.  We really got lots of work done, got our names out there even more and built on our mutual relationships.  I am very tired after these three weeks, but at the same time I am very positive and optimistic about the future of our group!  I want to thank all of you who pitched in and made it such a great success.

AFP Successfully Finishes a Complex Cement Plant Project in Tanzania

We have a bit going on in Africa as well these days…

The GPLN member Access Freight Projects (AFP) has recently been involved in the delivery of a 3500 TPD cement plant ex Mumbai to Tanga, Tanzania. The project is being commissioned by a Kenyan mining and cement manufacturing conglomerate who ordered the new cement plant to be commissioned at their existing Lime plant near the Tanzania port of Tanga (North of Dar es Salaam).

Coming off the back of the successful delivery of a 1000 TPD turn key cement plant project at Ndola, Zambia, in 2006 and the successful completion of two other major materials bulk handling projects in Zambia in 2007 for the same manufacturer of the Tanga cement plant, the shipper naturally turned to Access to come up with a solution for the delivery of this new cement plant project in Tanga.

105mt-on-modular“Although this contract would be FOB, the shipper strongly recommended the Access and its partners to the client as the only logistics provider to handle a project of this scope,” said Brad Stephens, COO for Projects at AFP, “And this was a recommendation that the importer later decided to follow. Our AFP projects team immediately traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mombasa and together with our local heavy lift expert agents conducted a port feasibility study and route survey.”
The options for discharge were Dar es Salaam Port, Tanga Port and Mombasa Port for onward delivery to the site some 20kms outside Tanga. The cargo comprised of 1,457 mt and 5,148 m3 of break bulk cargo and some 300 TEU of containers. The largest single pieces of breakbulk were mill shells of 15.5m long and 4.5m in diameter and weighing 105 mt each.

It was clear that the break bulk would require a geared charter vessel capable of lifting this massive cargo.

“While Tanga was obviously the closest port, it is not necessarily the best solution being that it is not served directly from any port other than Dar es Salaam and Mombasa, “said Brad Stephens, “This meant that cargo would have to be transshipped at one of these ports. Dar es Salaam has its advantages of direct sailings from Mumbai but port congestion is a concern and the bridge weight limitations ruled out the route from Dar to Tanga for the break bulk.”

imgp1719Tanga port is a natural harbor but is also very shallow and ocean going vessels cannot berth alongside the main quay. Ships have to anchor midstream and discharge to lighter barges which ferry the cargo across to the quay. There are only 2 x 45 mt shore cranes designed for container handling positioned on the quay so this also meant that the break bulk charter vessel would not be able to discharge directly in Tanga.

tanga-bay1“Our route survey from Tanga to Mombasa revealed that discharge in Mombasa and onward delivery by road from there to Tanga would also not be possible due to the weight limitations of the bridges on that route,” said Stephens, “Finally a solution was resolved to charter the break bulk vessel to Mombasa where it would discharge the cargo midstream to a massive sea going barge. The barge would be pre-loaded with a crawler crane and the multi-axle lowbeds and temporary propping stools for the heaviest cargo. The barge would then sail South from Mombasa to Tanga and with her shallow draft come alongside the quay at Tanga. The lowbeds would then drive off with the cargo directly to site. For the super heavy pieces, the multi-axle lowbed would drive under the stools and jack up the cargo onto its load bed to deliver the cargo to site. For the containers we resolved to transship to barge in Dar es Salaam and deliver to Tanga on through bills.”

Last month the first consignment of break bulk cargo was successfully transported according to the plan and all pieces were delivered without any reported incidents or near misses – quite a feat considering the infrastructural limitations in that part of the world!

I was sent these pictures by Patrick Lee of GPLN member CNC Freight Services. CNC Freight recently held their year end party and all staff reportedly had a great time celebrating the outgoing year. It looks like they all had a great time!

cnc-annual-dinner-2009-021
But this isn’t the only party they will have in 2009.

“This year (2009) will be our Golden Jubilee as we are already 10 years in business,” said Patrick Lee, managing director of CNC Freight Services, “We have grown from initial staff of 4 person to a stable number of 25 people.  We hope to make a big ‘bash’ and perhaps invite some GPLN members to join our celebration in Malaysia!”

The ten year celebration will tentatively held sometime in the 3rd quarter of this year.  I hope Patrick sends me an invite.  It will give me a reason to visit Malaysia again.

GPLN will have a Seat at the Table at BreakBulk Asia

In Uncategorized on December 16, 2008 at 3:02 pm

I have been asked to participate in a round table discussion at BreakBulk Asia with a few other distinguished experts on the second morning of the conference.  Our discussion will be concerning Intra-Asia Breakbulk Trade Lanes.

I for one see this as a great opportunity.  This is the first BreakBulk Asia event and to be asked to a panel is a bit of an honor and reflects on the stature that GPLN has in the world of project logistics. So I might be putting myself a bit on the spot but I will take the opportunity to invite anyone with a conference pass to come see my discussion panel.  It should be a very interesting conversation!
