GPLN member Arshiya Logistics WLL (formerly BDP Qatar WLL) handled some Groove Cranes movement from Michel Machinery Company Inc in the United States for the Qatari Shareholding Company (QSC) who is engaged into Dolphin Gas Project and several projects for RasGas / Qatar Gas in Qatar.

Arshiya Logistics WLL(Qatar) with help of 5K Logistics handled this project movement Ex-USA factory to Qatar project site. The transportation was done using a MAFI-Cargo trailers from the factory to GalvestonPort. The pick up locations were:

- St. Louis, Missouri – 2 cranes

- Corpus Christi, Texas – one crane

- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – one crane

A breakulk vessel from Galveston Port, United States, to Doha, Qatar was booked. Arshiya Logistics also handled inland haulage from DohaPort to the Qatari client’s site using low bed trailers and as well was engaged into arranging the duty waiver and exemption for this client at Doha Customs. Along with the haulage Arshiya arranged the police escort and Qatar Traffic Department permissions.

Initially, QSC had to move total four Grove cranes and the value was approx USD 1.8 million. Technical specifications were 581.624 m3 and total gross weight of 160 tons with height of 3.5 meters. There were letter of credit problems considering the time deadline, etc., and many bottlenecks in documentation because the supplier was dealing with Qatar client for the first time.

QSC nominated GPLN member Arshiya Logistics, considering Arshiya’s professionalism in project logistics globally. But handling projects requires special personalized touch as well as technical expertise because it is totally different ball game than normal containerized business. The following hurdles are confirm that if any project movement is given to any inexperienced service provider just based on rates then blue chip clients are off course paying penalties for their decision.

1) Just one day before the vessel arrival in Galveston Port Hurricane Ike hit the area.

2) Power, water issues keep GalvestonPort offline for about two weeks after Hurricane Ike left the port and much of the region. There was no trace of any shipment as the Port Authority closed the port.

3) But for Arshiya Logistics WLL (Qatar) it was matter client serving and 100% transparency. Arshiya Logistics arranged a 3rd-party surveyor to the port with help the help of 5K Logistics, the GPLN member in Philadelphia. The surveyor accessed the cranes and completed the survey. Everything was okay except some few tires, which were affected because of mud.

4) Most of the vessels cancelled calling at GalvestonPort after this hurricane.

5) These cranes were lying in GalvestonPort for almost 45 days.

Shipment was urgent for the Qatari company and for that they had full trust in Arshiya Logistics’s reliability and professionalism. Arshiya Logistics managed to get the shipment out from United States and in Doha within 40 days without any rate hike and port storage issues.

Arshiya Logistics team of Mr. Vaibhav Malpekar and Mr. Jigar Shah, with 5K Logistics (Mr. Paul J McGrath and team) were in full coordination and had conference calls almost every day in order to work out alterative solutions so that the delivery of these four cranes to the client could be managed as per prior commitment, in spite of all these hurdles.

Arshiya Logistics is handling more projects for the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) as well as KAHRAMA (the Qatar Water & Electricity Board).

GPLN member Trans International Logistics Sdn Bhd recently completed the movement of the Synthetic Latex Global plant from Europe and Asia to Pasir Gudang, Malaysia, with a total project volume of about 20,000 FRT.

As indirect tax exemption consultants for the project, Trans International had successfully applied their expertise in submitting, tabulating and obtaining exemption approvals from the Malaysian authorities. They also excelled in applying and obtaining import permits and governmental certification from regulatory bodies for the importation of their special equipments and machineries.

Other than general cargoes by sea, air and road transports, the project included movements of heavy lift cargoes of three reactors at 95 tons each and three strippers at 65 tons each and other over-dimensioned cargoes. For the heavy lifts, on-carriage to site was arranged on multi-axle trailers after temporary storage on elephant legs and beams so as to be in coordination with the plant site readiness and receiving management.

All deliveries were executed well within the required time frames and with zero untoward incidents.

For the second year in a row the Global Project Logistics Network has shown its commitment to Breakbulk Asia. Breakbulk Asia is the largest and most important gathering in Asia for companies involved in the shipping of heavy-lift, project cargo and traditional breakbulk cargoes. It is where shippers have the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with the leading specialized carriers, forwarders, ports, terminals and packers who have the expertise and resources to handle oversized cargoes with unique handling requirements. Exhibitors include the world’s major carriers, forwarders and ports that handle specialized heavy-lift, project and breakbulk cargoes. The Breakbulk Asia event is an outgrowth of the Breakbulk Conference and Exhibition held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the southern part of the United States since 1989 and the Breakbulk Europe event held in Antwerp since 2006. In addition to a bustling exhibition floor, Breakbulk Asia featured a two-day conference with top speakers addressing the theme "Charting the Recovery". The in-depth program delved into today’s most pressing breakbulk transportation issues: from cargo security to trade compliance and materials tracking initiatives. Speakers also discussed the hottest regions for breakbulk and project cargo, and review sectors such as oil and gas, and other power generation markets.

Europe Cargo was approached for the reception in Antwerp ex geared coaster up to barged to Fluor Terminal Frankfurt, Germany. The vessel, MV Jumbo Vision loaded in Punta Cugno, Italy and sailed from Punta Cugno port. The project consisted of 37 pieces of preassembled steel rack (858.303 mt / 14,095.695 m3), two cases of lifting equipment (2,276 mt / 6 m3) and eight pieces of lifting equipment (adjustable spreader bars / extenders: 7478 mt / 18 m3).

Europe Cargo’s supervisor reported that the cargo was loaded under deck as well as on deck. On Europe Cargo’s instructions, the crew unlashed the chains and unwelded stoppers and D-rings upon arrival at the Antwerp port.

The cargo was unloaded at the Europe Cargo terminal with specialized and necessary stevedore lifting equipment (extenders – easily adjustable) and by two Gottwald motorized mobile cranes with capacities of 100 mt (not by ship’s gear due to outreach and storage onto the shore and two cranes instead of one due to length of the cargo).

Due to the large storage area required, MV Jumbo Vision had to shift 40 m. Europe Cargo jointly surveyed unloading operations with the receiver’s appointed surveyors. Europe Cargo also arranged customs clearance in Antwerp. After unloading, necessary repairs and cleaning of the frames was arranged and took several days. When this was completed Europe Cargo ordered and arranged loading of four barges (110 m x 45 m) for the inland transport via Rhine river to the final Frankfurt site.

Europe Cargo’s professional expertise in the project was highly appreciated by the receivers’ engineers!

Cory Logistics, GPLN member in the United Kingdom, have been busy in the ‘home of stainless steel’ in 2009 and will continue to work through 2010. The first phase moving is a softener and de-scaler line from a redundant Sheffield Steel mill to its new home in India.

The steel industry in Sheffield dated back to the 14th Century. By the turn of the new century the Sheffield economy diversified and it is Cory Logistics who has been employed to remove and ship part of this manufacturing plant to India.

This project has been jointly operated with Canadian SCAC, and will move a total one hundred and forty 40’ high cube containers and a total of four thousand five hundred freight

tons as break bulk. Individual pieces can be more than 12 meters in length and can be up to 5 meters wide weighing more than 30 tons.

Mark Harding Commercial Director has been involved from the beginning and described how he pooled resources within Cory Logistics to create a dedicated project team. Mark said, “We have all the capabilities under one roof, planning has been complex and challenging”, but maintained that Cory’s will continue to offer a competitive advantage to create small teams of dedicated experts in their field.

“We have had one person negotiating space allocation on container ships, another discussing the safe securing of out of gauge cargo and its movement in relation to UK road restrictions,

whilst a third person is chartering a vessel to carry four thousand five hundred freight tons!”

The containers are moving through Felixstowe whilst the break bulk cargo will be transported by specialist equipment to the Port of Hull for shipment to Chennai, where it will be collected and delivered to site.

Left to Right: Ms. Fatma Jale Kemahlı (SNS International), Mr. Surendran K.S. (Logistics Plus India), Mr. Salim Gulam (Inchcape Shipping Services), Ms. Janet Nodar (Breakbulk Magazine) and Mr. Vikash Chandra (Logistics Plus India)
